You are never too young to start learning
about ‘the world
of work’ even at the tender age of 7!
And Primary school children are always keen to learn what business
is all about. With this in mind Liverpool Compact EBP has developed
a number of projects that introduce children to simple business
practices and help them acquire new skills. For example, the ‘Going for
Gold’ project encourages children to set targets, review their
performance and self-appraise – just as we do in our working
lives.
We also invite business volunteers to work directly with primary
pupils.
HOW DO THEY WORK?
If you’d like to develop links with a primary school you could
help in a number of ways:
- Do you enjoy reading? Volunteer to become a Reading Partner
and listen to 2 children read once a week for 10 weeks.
- Good with numbers? Volunteer to become a Number Partner.
Visit a school once a week and play number games with
2/3 pupils.
- Offer a visit to your workplace
- Talk to children in school about your job and what it entails
By getting involved in any of these activities you will help
develop children’s
confidence and self esteem and demonstrate where lessons fit into the ‘world
of work’.
BENEFITS TO YOUR BUSINESS
- Develops links with the community
- An opportunity for your staff to develop their team building,
communication and leadership skills
“The Reading Mentor Programme has offered a rewarding opportunity
for all our employees to actively support
local school children. A motivated workforce is
crucial to any business and this programme
has certainly helped motivate and develop staff that have nothing but positive
comments
about
their experience.”
