Motivating your students…………….
The Enterprise Springboard Project is a structured programme which
aims to motivate those Year 10 students who may be low achievers,
lack self confidence, career direction, or even feel alienated and
thus be at risk of under-achievement or disaffection. It aims to
give students a better understanding of the ‘workplace’,
equip them with key employability skills and encourage them to take
responsibility for their own future.
How does it work?
There are 5 distinct, yet related, phases of activity. The programme
is designed to progress from being adult/staff-led at the beginning,
to student-led in the later stages. This empowers the students
and encourages them to take greater responsibility for their
own future.
The phases of activity run over the course of the academic year,
commencing in September and culminating in May.
Phase 1 - Induction September/October
Phase 2 - Industry Visits November/December
Phase 3 - Skills Workshop December/January/February
Phase 4 - Enterprise Springboard
Projects February - May
Phase 5 - Celebration May/June
The Enterprise Springboard Project is designed to complement
the work related curriculum/careers education programme in
school or,
if supplemented by relevant lessons (i.e. skill development),
can be used as an alternative framework for those who wish
to use Section
363 (Dis-application from the National Curriculum). It is
not, however, designed to be a stand-alone, full time programme.
Phase 1 Induction
This consists of
one days INSET training for all staff who are responsible for the
project in school plus an induction
for students.
Phase 2 Industry Visits
Liverpool Compact EBP will organise at least 2 industrial
visits which include a tour of the organisation and
discussions with
various employees.
Phase 3 Skills Workshop
This off-site workshop is organised centrally and focuses
on developing TLC - Teamwork, Leadership and Communication
skills.
It acts as
a springboard to the fourth and arguably, the most
important phase - 'Enterprise Projects'.
Phase 4 Enterprise Projects
Enterprise Projects involve students working together
in self-managed teams to investigate a particular
area of
vocational interest.
Project work is undertaken over a period of 8-12
weeks. Students determine, plan and organise
visits to research
their chosen
subject and then share this information with
their peer group.
Phase 5 Celebration Event
The project culminates in a high profile celebration
event, where students give presentations and
are presented with
certificates.
Benefits to young people
- Better informed, motivated and more empowered
school leavers
- Development of independent learning skills
- Broader awareness of employers, training
providers and FE/HE colleges
- A greater knowledge of career opportunities
- Improved relationships with adults
and peers
Just read what these teachers
from Sandfield Park School
and St John
Bosco High School
had to say
about a visit
to the QE11
Law
Courts:
"This was a hugely motivational visit
for the group. The talk was geared at the appropriate level and
presented in a dynamic,
stimulating way"
"The pupils particularly enjoyed being
able to carry out a mock trial in a court room."
