Making a difference…
A Mentor can be a positive influence on a young person's educational
development.
How does it work?
You will know students that are in danger of not fulfilling their
potential. It could be due to lack of confidence, negative peer
pressure or low career aspirations. Perhaps they would benefit
from receiving
support from a Mentor.
Mentors are volunteers from Industry. They have undergone training
in accordance with the National Mentoring Network and are police
checked.
A Mentor can be a real motivator and help instil the importance
of doing one's best at school to increase the student's chance
of getting
a good job.
A successful mentoring relationship can result in
- a student’s improved school attendance and punctuality
- improved standards of school work
- improved relationships with teachers/other students
- clearer career ideas
A Mentor meets with the student for up to an hour, once a fortnight,
to discuss school, aspirations and life in general. It
is hoped that a real rapport will
grow between mentor and mentee. However if this does not happen
either can withdraw from the programme at any stage.
Benefits to young people
- Increases confidence and self-esteem
- Raises career aspirations
"Mentoring has helped my confidence,
getting (me) out of trouble in school and helping me think about
a part time job."
"I'm happy to talk to adults more"
