Spend a day in Industry!

OFSTED recommends that teachers and support staff should have the opportunity to learn more about Industry and the workplace. And as it is now a statutory requirement that all schools provide Work Related Learning for their students, YOU can update your own understanding of the workplace, business and enterprise.

We can help!

As part of your professional development, we can arrange for you to spend a day, alone or as part of a group in a company or particular business sector. Be it in the financial sector, leisure & tourism, the construction industry or in the museums and art galleries. The choice is endless and in most cases it’s FREE!

You can attend pre-organised Group placements that we advertise every term or we can organise a specific placement just for you or maybe an INSET day for example, for the entire Business Studies Department!

How do placements work?

Placements are open to all Primary, Secondary and Special School teachers and support staff.

YOU can choose to go on a curricular, management or personal development placement.

A curricular placement

one that is related to your area of teaching - your subject area and will help you deliver the national curriculum. For example:

  • A Food Technology Teacher may wish to learn about the running of a Chinese restaurant and spend the day working with a Head Chef
  • A Science teacher may find it useful to spend the day in a Chemical Plant
  • A Learning Mentor may wish to visit the Crown Courts and meet the Police and Probation service
  • A Special Needs Teaching Assistant may want to learn more about ADHD at a Support group

A management placement

Spend a day in a company focusing on HR, management techniques, leadership skills and appraisal systems. Deputy Heads and Senior teachers often enjoy these days.

A personal development placement

It's your choice - be it an interest in Art or conservation! As long as the placement will inform your teaching and be of benefit to the school it is relevant.

It's as simple as that.

Benefits to YOU

Professional Development Placements:

  • Increase your understanding of industry and Careers
  • Help you produce innovative approaches to the curriculum
  • Give you access to resources for lessons, case studies and course work
  • Can help you form a valuable link with an employer for future student visits

“Hearing about how the Courts work, meeting a Judge, Court Clerks, the Police and Probation Service was not only fascinating but very informative. It will help me with my teaching of Citizenship.”

Christabel Smith, Head of PSHE, St Francis Xavier’s College

“This was an excellent day for PSHE teachers and Learning Mentors. I saw for myself the realities of Prison and I can pass on this information to pupils to try and prevent them from offending.”
